Fixing the constitution

Raise your hand if you’ve read the constitution. Its a fucking mess. We live in a country whose most important rules have obvious bugs… Too many levels of government explicitly sharing responsibility for an outcome, which structurally can’t succeed, blaming each other when it fails… but still all getting paid full rate, and taxing us more each year… And these rules are nearly impossible to fix.

I’m not proposing we try.

I think the better move is the end-run. Alberta should quit Canada. Quebec hopefully falls for it and does to. The maritimes and BC would fast follow on an unchecked Ontario. Its all on paper - its official - its gonna take effect in 3 years or whatever. Then… Ontario - realizing its nonsense alone - does the right thing:

we’re fixing the constitution if everyone rejoins. Canada 2.0.

Heres the constitutional changes I’d offer:

1. Clear accountability: one level of government per outcome, no sharing.
2. Cities become provinces: major metropolitan areas govern themselves. Legacy provinces govern everywhere else.
3. Unify tax collection. Align tax use with responsibility.
4. Measure outcomes: governments are accountable to objective metrics
5. Prefer technology over human-powered bureaucracy.
6. Future gets a voice.
7. Counter populism: politicians win through producing outcomes.

While we’re waiting for Alberta to quit… I like Build Canada. It’s the closest anyone is to talking about the right problems right now.
